How to Choose a Secure Password

How to Choose a Secure Password

A strong password helps protect your hosting account, email account, website and client area access.

Using a secure password is one of the simplest ways to protect your services with Dynamic Servers Limited. Weak or reused passwords can make it easier for someone to gain access to your account, email or website.

What makes a strong password?

A secure password should be:

  • At least 12 characters long
  • A mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
  • A mix of numbers and symbols
  • Unique to the service you are using
  • Difficult to guess

What should I avoid?

You should avoid using:

  • Your name, business name or domain name
  • Dates of birth or memorable dates
  • Simple words such as password, admin or welcome
  • Repeated characters such as 111111 or qwerty
  • The same password across multiple websites

Example of a better password format

Instead of using a single word, consider using a longer passphrase with numbers and symbols.

Example format: Three random words, mixed with numbers and symbols.

Please do not use the example password above. It is only provided to show the type of format that is easier to remember but harder to guess.

Should I use a password manager?

Yes. A password manager can help you create and store strong, unique passwords for each service you use. This means you do not need to remember every password yourself.

When should I change my password?

You should change your password if:

  • You think someone else may know it
  • You have used the same password elsewhere
  • A device you use has been lost or stolen
  • You notice suspicious activity on your account
  • Someone who previously had access no longer needs it
